A new hiking route around Kerlingarfjoll (04/02/2010)
Next summer we will formally open a new hiking route which will take you around Kerlingarfjoll in 3 days. On the route there are two small huts, the Klakkur hut which is SE or Kerlingarfjoll and then the hut at Kisubotnar at the NE edge of Kerlingarfjoll.
The route is approximately 50km in total and the landscape is extraordinary.
Day one: From the buildings in Asgardur (the main facilities) you head SW through sandy hills to the rock pillar Kerling (from where the name Kerlingarfjoll comes from) and from there either south or north of Mt. Ogmundur. The N route lies through valley Slettaskard and from there over Kerlingarspraena to the Klakkur hut.
Day two: Hiking along the E side of Kerlingarfjoll and passing the mountains Klakkur, Grakollur and to the magnificent Kisugljufur canion. The day ends at Kisubotnar which is a small valley at the end of Kisugljufur canion.
Day three: From Kisugljufur to the N side of Mt. Lodmundur and to Fannborg.
We are working on preparing a map for this route and will publish the map here on the web soon. More images at the Hiking Routes link
